10 party games for a lively group with no props

Published: 13 August 2026 · Author: DigitalTouch

The deck is at home, the tokens are in a cupboard, and people are already at the table. That is not a reason to open a feed. Below are ten games that only need a group and a voice. No “innovative platform”: just things you can start in a minute.

If you want a phone game where roles stay private and talk stays out loud, open Zayac or the short how-to.

What to look for in a no-prop game

A good group game has three signs:

  1. A clear goal from the first circle. Nobody wants a twenty-minute charter.
  2. Everyone talks. If half the room silently waits for “their phase”, the night falls apart.
  3. You can stop after one round. Or keep going if it works.

A phone is either unused or a quiet deck — not a chat.

1. Associations around the table

Someone names a word. The next person says an association. No repeats. Whoever freezes longer than the agreed time is out or does a forfeit.

Why: a warm-up. In five minutes people look at each other, not at the table.

2. Yes / no about a secret

One person thinks of a word or character. Everyone else may only ask yes/no questions. Cap the number of questions or it drags.

Works in a car and in a kitchen. Fails when people pick ultra-niche meme names half the group doesn’t know.

3. One-sentence story

The first player says a sentence. Each person adds the next. Play for comedy or for a mystery. The only rule: don’t undo what was already said.

It isn’t a contest. It’s a way to get quiet people talking without “so tell us something”.

4. Who just lied

Each person states three facts about themselves: two true, one false. The group votes. You don’t need a host — you need people who know each other a little or can improvise.

Close to social deduction, but without a deck or a “night”.

5. Forbidden word

Pick a theme (food, films, cities). One specific word, known to all, must not be said. Whoever slips records a forfeit. Simple, loud, good between rounds of a “more serious” game.

6. Portrait without a name

Describe a person, film, or object without naming it. Others guess. Ban hints like “it’s the one whose surname is…”.

This is already the skill you need in Zayac: hint to your side without handing the word to the extra player.

7. Shared list

Theme: “things for a trip”, “dinner dishes”, “what to bring to a picnic”. Each person adds an item. No repeats. Name something that can’t exist in the theme and you’re out.

Good for large groups: no long role explanation.

8. Silent drawing in the air

No paper. Mime a film, job, or animal. This isn’t charades with cards: a neighbour whispers the word or types it in notes and hides the phone.

The phone is only the secret holder. Talk is between people again.

9. Who left the theme

The group picks a broad theme. Everyone takes turns naming “on-theme” words. One player, by agreement or at random, must bluff with nearby ideas. At the end of the circle, vote who was off-theme.

That’s almost the Zayac loop, minus a ready word list and a private role on screen. If you want the same idea without anyone peeking at cards, read the Zayac rules.

10. Zayac — a party game with phones

Zayac is built for a night at the table:

  • 3 to 12 people;
  • join by QR or a short code;
  • everyone except one knows the secret word;
  • associations are spoken out loud; there is no chat;
  • voting and scores live in the app.

The phone doesn’t replace conversation. It keeps the secret: who the Hare is and which word is hidden. Themes come from a library of AI-prepared sets; a new set is created when that game has used up available ones — not every round.

For a wider map of formats, see party games.

How to pick a game for tonight

Situation What to start
Just sat down, still quiet Associations or a shared list
The room is already loud Forbidden word, who lied
You want suspicion and bluff Who left the theme, or Zayac
Little space / a trip Yes/no, one-sentence story
Phones yes, deck no Zayac

Don’t mix five systems in one night. One clear format and three or four rounds beats “let’s try that other game, I’ll explain it now”.

What to avoid

  • Games that need closed eyes and a host monologue when there is no host.
  • Formats where half the room is out forever after the first mistake.
  • Replacing talk with a shared YouTube “quiz” screen.

A no-prop game works when people look at each other. A phone can deal roles. It should not become the table.

Zayac in five steps

  1. One player creates a room.
  2. Everyone else scans the QR.
  3. Check the theme and words; don’t flash the screen.
  4. Say associations out loud.
  5. Vote on who’s faking it.

Scoring, ties, and disputes are in the rules. “How many people” and “can we play remotely” live in the FAQ.

Sit together. Agree on one game. And don’t dig in the cupboard for props — they’re already gone.
